Winter Is Coming… This Spring!
With the new season of Game of Thrones hitting the airwaves on 14th April, the world is saying that winter is coming: what better time to look at some facts about heating?
Winter is Coming…. this Spring
- The North is certainly cold in Game of Thrones, and it’s no different in the UK. 57% of boiler breakdowns happen in the Northern half of the country compared to 43% in the South.
- In autumn and winter, the most common day of the week for a boiler to break down is a Monday.
- It is much harder to get a plumber out in the winter to fix your boiler, so the end of the cold months is the ideal time to get your boiler checked over and serviced. Doing so will reduce the risk of it breaking down at the most inconvenient time.
Common Boiler Problems
If you don’t have a fire-breathing dragon like Daenerys Targaryen, then you will have to rely on your boiler to keep your house warm. Here are the most common boiler problems:
- A faulty or broken pump
- A broken thermostat
- Leaking or broken thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)
- A faulty or broken timer switch
- A burnt-out thermocouple
Al of these problems are relatively easy to repair, but if you leave it till the weather is freezing, you may struggle to find a plumber as the demand increases in the winter months.
Beware Boiler Breakdowns!
A regular, annual service is essential to keep your heating functioning properly. Don’t wait for the (Jon) Snow to come before getting your boiler checked. The most common season for a boiler breakdown is, as you might expect, autumn and winter, with 78% of faults occurring in these months.
