What You Need To Know About The Winter Fuel Payment
If your date of birth is on or before 5th November 1953, then you could be entitled to between £100 and £300 each winter to help with your heating bills. This is called the ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. If you are eligible, you usually get the Winter Fuel Payments automatically.
How Much Will I Get?
How much Winter Fuel Payment you get depends on your circumstances in a “qualifying week”. The qualifying week this year was 17th to 23rd September 2018. If you do get the payment, it is tax-free and does not affect any of your other benefits.
How and when you are paid
You will be sent a letter to tell you how much you will get and the estimated payment date. Payments are made automatically, usually between November and December. If you are entitled to any other benefits, your Winter Fuel Payments is made at the same time as your usual payments.
Eligibility for Winter Fuel Payments
You will qualify for a Winter Fuel Payments if BOTH of the following apply:
- You were born on or before 5th November 1953
- You were living in the UK for at least one day within the qualifying week
You do not qualify for the payment if you:
- Are in
hospital for more than a year getting free treatment - need permission to enter the UK and cannot claim public funds
- were in prison for the whole of the qualifying week
- lived in a care home for the whole of the qualifying week and got one or more of:
- Income Support
- Pension Credit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
