What To Do If You Have Work Booked During The Lockdown?

What to do if you have work booked during the lockdown?

The government hopes to be able to ‘turn the tide’ on the coronavirus within three months of the start of the lockdown, but it is still a lot more difficult to get work done in your home during this time. And, of course, the restrictions might last longer. So what if you have work booked during the lockdown?

What to do if you have work booked during the lockdown?

If you have a big project booked in your home during this timeframe and it has not started yet, it is worth considering whether you are still comfortable to go ahead under the planned schedule – and if it is really necessary. For example, is there something that urgently requires fixing, or you’re your planning permission expires within the next few weeks? Could you perhaps delay the project until later on in the year?

You will still have to effectively practice social distancing whilst the work is carried out and you must be content with the protective measures that your trader will take. Do you have a written contract or agreement for the work? If you do not have an agreement in writing, you have more flexibility to cancel the work or delay it. If you’ve signed a contract, are you within the 14-day cooling-off period? This allows you to cancel without any penalties if you wish? If those 14 days have passed, what does the contract say about changes to the schedule of work? Talk to your builder as soon as possible about how to proceed. Even if your contract doesn’t allow for flexibility, there’s often scope to negotiate and compromise given the circumstances.

If you do plan to go ahead, check that the trader is still willing and able to do the work. Discuss what will happen you (or the trader) gets ill before the start date, or if stricter measures are introduced by the government.
