Things To Check Before You Turn On The Central Heating
Now that winter is here, many will be having a debate between putting on another jumper, or giving in and putting the heating on. After your boiler has hibernated through the summer, it might not be ready for working in winter. To make sure that your boiler works as it should, here are some things to check before you turn on the central heating:
Things To Check Before You Turn On The Central Heating
Has the boiler been serviced?
Perhaps the biggest contributor to your energy bills is your central heating system, so making sure it’s in good shape for winter is essential! Four out of five boiler breakdowns occur in winter, which is why it’s best to have your boiler serviced in the summer. That way if anything crops up, you have plenty of time to get it sorted it. If you haven’t had your boiler serviced this year, don’t worry, there’s still time. L&W Heating and Plumbing can service your boiler any time of the year!
Exclude draughts!
There’s no point having your heating system operating as efficiently as possible, to then lose that heat to a draught! Draught proofing your home is relatively inexpensive, and anyone can do it. Not only does it save you energy (and therefore money) but it also reduces the amount of work your boiler does – so it will stay healthier for longer.
Here are some good places to check:
- Windows – Especially if they have wooden frames. Considering keeping curtains closed to keep the heat in
- Loft hatch – Heat rises, so you are likely losing a lot of heat through the loft
- Extractor fan – Extractor fans are great at reducing humidity in your home, but an old one that is not used will be letting out the warmth
- Cracks – It’s worth checking your home for cracks in the exterior walls as these will let heat out –check your skirting boards too!
