Taking Care of Your Boiler

An annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer is the best way to reduce the chance of a breakdown or other issues, but it may not eliminate them completely. There are still you can do yourself throughout the year to make sure your boiler is working efficiently. Here are a few tips.

  • Boiler servicing is essential-have it serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Check the pressure regularly and adjust it if required, so it matches the recommended settings in your boiler’s manual.
  • Even in summer, run the central heating for 10-15 minutes every month to prevent it from seizing up.
  • Test your timer and room thermostat to make sure they work correctly.
  • Regularly inspect the boiler for signs of leaks, soot or damage.
  • Make sure the boiler condensate pipe is lagged, to stop it freezing in cold weather.
  • Check your boiler for sooty black marks, which indicate a combustion problem. If you see any, immediately contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Bleed your radiators to remove excess air from the central heating system regularly.
  • Check that there is sufficient ventilation around the boiler. If it is in a cupboard, keep the surrounding area clear.
  • Check that external vents, flues and air bricks are clear of obstruction.
  • If you can see the pilot light, make sure it burns with a strong blue flame. If it burns yellow or appears elongated, call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately.
  • Keep your boiler manual safe. If you do not have one, check the manufacturer’s website.
  • Make sure that you install a Carbon Monoxide detector in the same room as your boiler. Test it every month.
