Professional Plumbers
Many of us are wary of being cheated by dishonest or unqualified tradespeople. Such ‘cowboys’ are the exception and not the rule, but there are poor plumbers out there. Here are our tips to help you tell if you are using professional plumbers.
Professional Plumbers – Beware, Uninvited Callers
We plumbers are constantly in demand, so it’s not likely that one will call at your door looking for business. If they do, ask why they are not bust and ask to see their credentials. Good fraudsters can seem extremely plausible, so be cautious and do not invite them into your home. It is better to get recommendations from friends and family or use a well-established local firm such as L&W Heating and Plumbing who have Gas Safe qualifications, professional accreditation and proper insurance.
Professional Plumbers – Never Accept Telephone Quotes
No reputable plumber can give you an accurate quote on a job until it has been seen. Accepting such one a quote leaves you open to the practice of making a tempting low estimate that gets revised upwards as the job progresses, or simply for being overcharged from the outset. Get a fixed price – in writing – for the job before work commences but after the plumber has seen it.
Professional Plumbers – Don’t Pay For Unnecessary Work
Some cowboys pump up their prices by adding in parts and labour charges. They think that because you’re not an expert, you won’t know the difference between a valve and a grommet. But if you get a few estimates from different plumbers then anomalies will soon become obvious.
Professional Plumbers – Beware the Bait and Switch
If you bought a Mercedes and was sent a Skoda you’d soon spot the difference. But do you know the difference between the top of the range boiler and a budget one? When you get quotes, make sure the make and model of parts or equipment is specified. Then you’ll know that what you get is not a cheap substitute that lets the plumber pocket the difference.
Professional Plumbers – Never Pay Until the Job is Done
Though it is standard practice to ask for a down payment to cover parts before starting work, beware of being asked for payment in full before the job is done. After you have parted with your cash your job might slip down the plumber’s priorities, and you’ll have no leverage if you’re unhappy with the finished job.
