• Has the power supply to the boiler been switched on? You will usually find an isolation switch for the heating system, (situated near the boiler itself or its thermostat) so ensure that it has been turned to the ‘on’ position.
• Is the gas supply to your home switched on? Check the Emergency Control Valve next to the gas meter; sometimes it is accidentally knocked into the off position. There will be a label on it to clearly indicate which way is ‘open’.
• Is your boiler turned on? Make sure that all its lights are illuminated, and that the display looks okay.
• If your boiler has a pilot light, check that it is lit. If not, you can re-light it by following the instructions that came with the boiler.
• If the boiler does not show a pilot light, then look out for a warning light – perhaps asking you to ‘reset’ your boiler.
• Does your boiler show a warning light or message saying “low water pressure”? This can often be easily resolved by following the manufacturer’s instructions to refill it.
• Is your central heating timer or programmer switched on? Check that the display is present, and the correct time is being shown.
• Is the thermostat set to a sufficiently high temperature? Make sure that your thermostat is set at a level that will turn on the heating, most houses are comfortable at 19-21 degrees.
• If you have checked all these things and still have not got heating, then it is time to think about calling on a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer for help.
