How Often Should I Need To Top Up The Pressure In The Heating System

One of the most common problems that we come across with central heating systems is boilers that do not operate due to there being insufficient pressure. Often, using the filling loop is enough to repressurise the system and get it working, but how often is too often and when might a loss of pressure indicate a problem or leak? So how often should I need to top up the pressure in the heating system?

How often should I need to top up the pressure in the heating system?

When your heating is not turned on and your radiators are cool, the pressure displayed on your boiler should be between 1 and 1.5 bar on the pressure gauge. This is often indicated by a green section beneath the indicator needle). If pressure drops below 0.5 bar (in the red section), then water has been lost from the system and it must be replaced. Note that the red part of the dial can also indicate the pressure being too high, so you may have a red section at about 2.75 bar. If the pressure gauge indicates high pressure, you need to bleed a radiator until the pressure gauge drops back down to between 1 and 1.5 bar.

If the pressure goes up by more than 1 bar when the heating is on then the expansion vessel may need repressurising. This requires a heating service engineer. The pressure in the system usually needs topping up once or twice per year. If you are repressurising your heating system more frequently than this, please call us for advice.
