Your boiler keeps you warm in winter and provides you with hot water all year round. In addition to your annual service from a Gas Safe registered plumber, there are a few simple things that can help keep it in top condition. Read our boiler maintenance guide to find out more.

Run your heating regularly

Run your heating once a month, even in summer, to clear the boiler pump. 10 – 15 minutes every month is sufficient to minimise the chance of a breakdown.

Avoid blockages

Never cover your gas boiler or block its air vents. Check the outside flue is not blocked.

Carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odourless, and invisible poisonous gas, which is produced when gas appliances do not completely burn their fuel. Caring for the boiler can help keep carbon monoxide at bay. Buy a carbon monoxide alarm to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning; they cost £15 – £30 and are found at DIY stores.  Install the alarm a metre or more away from your boiler (ideally in the same room and remember to test it regularly. If a leak occurs you must call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.

What if you’re a tenant?

Tenants aren’t responsible for the boiler –it is the landlord’s responsibility. By law, your landlord must ensure that your boiler is in working order, and serviced annually and provide you with a CP12 Gas Safety Certificate.

If you suspect a gas leak

If you suspect a gas leak in your home, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately. The number is 0800 111 999. Write it on a sticker and attach to the side of your boiler.

Central heating troubles can often be tricky to solve, so if you have a problem with your boiler, it’s best to call a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer to look at the problem.
