Barbecue Safety The Danger of Carbon Monoxide

It has been reported that up to three in four Britons are as concerned about damaging their garden plants as they are over Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning when they are having a barbecue. Read on to learn more about the dangers of barbecue safety and BBQ carbon monoxide poisoning…

Barbecue Safety The Danger of Carbon Monoxide

Half the nation’s households plan on having barbecues this year, with the average number per household being five. Gas Safe Register has out a reminder to us to be aware of the symptoms of CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning. Carbon Monoxide gas – often called a ‘silent killer’ – has no colour, taste or smell – and it can be fatal.

Researchers have found that most people do not know the danger of potential CO poisoning when they are having a barbecue. In fact, CO poisoning came only slightly ahead of damaging plants in the survey!

BBQ safety tips:

  • Never use a barbeque indoors
  • Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning:
    • Nausea
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Headaches
    • Dizziness
    • Collapse
    • Breathlessness
  • Follow the operating instructions
  • Do not take a BBQ into a tent, caravan or cabin – even after use.
  • Always make sure your BBQ is in view and do not leave it lit when you are sleeping

If you think someone has CO poisoning, move right away from the BBQ – and immediately call the emergency services on 999.
