If you’ve turned the thermostat but get back to a cold home with no hot water, there’s possibly something wrong with the boiler. Here are some ideas to diagnose the issue before calling in the professionals.

First, check your boiler pressure. It should be between 1 and 1.5 if the system is not in use. If not, call a Gas Safe Registered boiler engineer.

1. Check your thermostat

A faulty thermostat can cause problems. Try increasing the temperature to see if it triggers the boiler. Sometimes thermostat settings change due to an accidental knock. If the temperature and time display is set as you expect, call a professional.

2. Check your timer settings

Check your boiler’s timer settings haven’t changed when the clocks changed, check its power supply and/or back-up batteries and make sure another family member hasn’t changed the settings without your knowledge.

3. Bleeding your radiators

If your radiators are not as warm as they should, or even ice cold, try bleeding them. A plumber can do this or you can do it yourself.

4. Replace your boiler

If LPG boiler has broken down beyond repair, you could replace it with a brand new, energy efficient one.

5. Make sure your pipes haven’t frozen

When it’s really cold outside and the pipes have frozen, you can try to thaw them yourself with hot (not boiling!) water. Or use a hot water bottle or other warm compress to the pipes.

7. Check your pilot light hasn’t blown out

If your boiler has a pilot light, check it is lit. If not, read your manufacturer’s instructions to relight it or call a professional engineer to take a look.
