How to Get Your Home Prepared for Autumn

Give your boiler a health check

Get all of the gas appliances in your home serviced and inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer annually. Autumn is the ideal time for this. Ask the engineer to carry out a test of your gas pipework. The test will show if you have a gas leak.

Test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors

Autumn is the time we start turning on our heating and lighting the fire. It is vital to test all of your smoke and CO (Carbon monoxide) detectors to ensure they are working properly.

Make your home more energy efficient

Did you know that 25-30% of all the heat our boilers produce is lost through leaks and draught in windows or doors? To avoid high heating bills, check for leaks and gaps.

First, check all the windows and door frames – feel for draughts round the edges. If you find any, the simplest way to do the repairs yourself is to install weather stripping or caulk around the frames.

Do any radiators need bleeding?

You can easily check and bleed radiators yourself. Get a radiator key from your local hardware store and you can release any that is trapped inside, improving the efficiency of the radiator and making your home warmer.

The tell-tale signs of a radiator in need of bleeding are:

• A gurgling noise,
• The radiator takes a long time to heat up
• The top of the radiator feels much colder than the bottom.
