How to Diagnose a Leaking Boiler

How to Diagnose a Leaking Boiler

A leaking boiler is fairly common. Once identified, it must be dealt with as quickly as possible to prevent lasting damage. In this article, we help you diagnose a leaking boiler and provide an insight into some of the possible causes.

How to Diagnose a Leaking Boiler

It can be hard to find the cause behind a leaking boiler; it can stem from either inside or outside of the appliance.

Possible causes are failed seals or joints, or elements within the boiler that are responsible for carrying water can crack. High water pressure is another common cause of leaks.

Look out for:

  • Drips or damp patches below the boiler
  • Signs of corrosion on the boiler’s casing and pipework
  • The pressure gauge showing higher or lower than 1.5 bar.

Boiler pressure

Your boiler’s pressure should be somewhere between 1 and 2 bars (ideally 1.5). If the pressure is too high, its pressure relief valve will leak water.

On a sealed system if water escapes from the system, it can mean there’s an issue and potentially a leak causes the system to release excess pressure. It’s worth noting that low boiler pressure is another possible indication of a leak.

Corrosion

Corrosion in pipes and boilers can cause elements to weaken and allow water to escape. If the corrosion is widespread, consider investing in a new boiler Warrington.

Temperature issues

When a boiler’s temperature gets too high, it can leak. This could be caused by a fault with the temperature sensor in the boiler: contact a Gas safe engineer Warrington for help.

Cracks in the boiler

It is normal for a boiler to develop flaws over time. The repeated warming and cooling of the heat exchanger causes the metal to expand and contract, and this can eventually lead to cracks or splits.
