What Happens If My Boiler Flue Is Blocked?

If your boiler’s flue pipe is incomplete or incorrectly located, gases can find their way back inside your home: this can be extremely dangerous.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide gas is odourless and colourless, which makes it difficult to detect. Although it’s not the responsibility of homeowners or landlords, it makes sense to make you have at least one carbon monoxide alarm fitted in any room in your home with a gas appliance. To do so is the law for a private landlord or if a solid fuel appliance is fitted in the building.

What can cause a blocked flue?

Signs of a blockage could be black or dark marks around the appliance. The most common cause is natural: you might notice leaves, conkers, twigs, pinecones, bits of birds’ nests or even dead birds blocking your flue.

What do I do if I think my boiler flue is blocked?

Stop using the appliance immediately and have it checked by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Don’t use it till you get the all clear from your plumber. Never use a gas appliance unless you are sure it is safe.
