Gas Safety Week 2022

Gas Safety Week 2022 takes place between the 12^th and the 18^th September 2022. In its twelfth year, this pan-industry event brings gas professionals coming together for a common goal — keeping the nation safe from the dangers of gas.

Although the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II has led to the cancellation of many of the activities that were planned for Gas Safety Week 2022, the main messages about gas safety remain as important as ever.

Ten Ways to Stay Gas Safe

• Only ever choose Gas Safe registered engineers to fit, fix and service gas appliances. You can check an engineer’s credentials at GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 408 5500.
• Check both the front and back of the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card to make sure they are qualified for the work you are having done.
• Have all of your gas appliances serviced and safety checked every year. If you rent, ask for a copy of the landlord’s Gas Safety Record.
• Learn the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning:
  • headache,
  • dizziness,
  • breathlessness,
  • nausea,
  • collapse
  • loss of consciousness.
• Check gas appliances for the warning signs that they are not working right such as a lazy yellow flame, black stains around the appliance or excessive condensation.
• Fit a carbon monoxide alarm. This alerts you if there is any carbon monoxide in your home.\
• Keep your vents and chimneys clear. Never block any vents: they are vital for safety.
• Only ever use your gas appliances for their intended purpose. E.g. don’t use a gas cooker to heat your room.
• Learn what to do in case of an emergency if you smell gas.
• Share this gas safety information with friends and family to keep everyone safe.
