Why Your Boiler May Be Leaking

If you have noticed a leak from your boiler, it is important to get it fixed quickly to avoid damage being done to your heating system. Read on to find out why your boiler may be leaking…

Why Your Boiler May Be Leaking

There are several reasons why water leaks from a boiler. The root cause can be determined if you can identify where the water is coming from.

Corroded Components

The pipes immediately beneath a boiler are most often to blame for a leak. Over time, components in your boiler start to corrode, creating small holes. If it’s just one part that is corroded, you will need to have that part replaced. However, if multiple parts have corroded, you may need a new boiler.

High Boiler Pressure

If the boiler pressure is too high, water might leak from it as the boiler releases the excess pressure.

An easy way to check this is by reading the pressure gauge. If the needle is above 2, your pressure is too high and needs to be lowered. Try bleeding your radiators first, but if this doesn’t fix the issue, call an engineer.

Faulty Heat Exchanger

Sometimes the heat exchanger fails, cracks or gets damaged, causing a leak.

Loose Joints

Over time, your heating system sees a lot of wear and tear. Joints can become loose as a result of water repeatedly expanding and contracting as it heats and cools.

High Temperature

Boilers have a temperature control valve (TCV) to monitor the temperature of the water and stop it getting too high. If you see water leaking from the temperature valve, it is likely too hot and could mean scalding water comes out of your taps. Locate the adjustment needle and turn it 45º anticlockwise to decrease the temperature.

Pump Seals

If you notice water coming from the pump, it will likely need to be resealed or replaced.

Overflow Pipe Leaking

The overflow pipe leads from the water storage tank inside your home to outside. When it is dripping with water, the most common cause is the float valve.
