If you do not regularly clean your showerhead, you will eventually notice a weaker flow of water, maybe even water that shoots off in every direction due to blocked ducts and a build-up of limescale. All can be easily solved with a deep clean.

How to descale your showerhead

Limescale can clog your showerhead and make it look dirty. A number of homemade solutions can get it shining again, such as lemon juice and trusty white vinegar.

Fixed shower heads

If you cannot remove your showerhead:

• Half-fill a plastic bag with white vinegar
• Affix it securely with a rubber band around the showerhead, to the showerhead is immersed in vinegar
• Leave it overnight to soak. (brass, gold, or nickel-plated showerheads must be removed from the vinegar after half an hour or it will damage the finish.
• Remove the bag from the showerhead. Switch on the shower and run it hot water for a minute or so to flush out any mineral deposits stuck inside
• Scrub with an old toothbrush to shift any remaining limescale around the ducts
• Do another flush with hot water. Repeat until the limescale is gone
• Wipe the showerhead with a soft cloth to finish.

Unfixed shower head

If you can unscrew the showerhead, it is easier to do a deep clean:

• Remove the showerhead
• Fill the washing up bowl with a mixture of white vinegar or lemon juice and warm water
• Soak the showerhead for half an hour
• Rinse it in warm water and scrub off any limescale that is remaining.
