What Should You Ask Your Heating Engineer Before They Start Work During The Lockdown

Current government advice is that everyone in the UK should only leave their home to shop for fundamental necessities; to take one form of outdoor exercise a day; to travel for a medical need; to take care of a vulnerable person and to travel to and from work if it is ‘absolutely necessary’. We must also practise social distancing while in public. This means limiting contact with people who aren’t in your household and always maintaining a two-metre gap between other people. If you need to have work done by a professional in your house, you have to think: is it essential or can the project wait? The best way to limit your risk from coronavirus is to postpone any non-essential work. What should you ask your heating engineer before they start work during the lockdown?

If a trader or engineer has to visit your home during the coronavirus pandemic, there are certain steps that you should take to protect yourself from the virus.

You should:

  • Keep your distance from visitors and avoid any physical contact.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least twenty seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover any coughs or sneezes with a tissue, then throw it in the bin and wash your hands.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces in the home.

Before the trader visits, you should find out what measures they are going to take to protect both you and themselves.

Your tradesperson should:

  • Use PPE (personal protective equipment). This could include disposable gloves or a face mask.
  • Make a commitment to regularly washing their hands or using hand sanitiser.
  • Have policies for monitoring the health of staff who will be visiting your home
  • Screen customers before they visit – for example, by asking if you or anyone in your household has, or has displayed any symptoms of, Covid-19 such as a persistent cough or a high temperature.
