What If You Do If You Are Halfway Through A Renovation During Isolation?

What If You Do If You Are Halfway Through A Renovation During Isolation

The government may plan to ‘turn the tide’ on the coronavirus within twelve weeks of lockdown, but it is more difficult to get work done in your home at this time. Of course, the restrictions could last longer. So what if you are halfway through a renovation during isolation?

What if you do if you are halfway through a renovation during isolation?

Here are some of the key things to think about and if your project is already in progress:

  • Is it essential that the work is done at the moment? If you only have half a kitchen then you may struggle to prepare meals if you need to self-isolate, so it may well be crucial to complete the project.
  • Consider if you can effectively practise social distancing while the work goes on. Talk to your trader about whether it’s practical or even possible to continue, how the work can be carried out safely and decide if you are happy with the proposed measures.
  • Check what the contract says about changing the schedule of work and what would happen if you did decide to cancel. Bear in mind that you are going to have to be a lot more flexible about the project schedule if it does continue. Traders may become ill, need to self-isolate and may have to work around childcare responsibilities and their suppliers may not be open.
  • Delays won’t entitle you to cancel the contract. If you do decide to cancel for any reason, you should find out if you would incur any financial penalty.
  • If your trader decides they cannot finish the project, you could have the right to cancel the contract without penalty, depending on the circumstances and the contractual terms.
  • Effective communication with your trader is the key to managing the situation. Always approach any discussions calmly and with a level head as you try to work out a compromise.
