If you are locked down and vulnerable or self-isolating due to Coronavirus it is still possible for your heating to fail. Here are some of the measures your Gas Safe registered engineer will take during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Given the increased restrictions that have been put in place in order to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, it is essential that any engineer undertaking work in people’s homes still follows all of the public health guidelines:

• Keeping a minimum of 2 metres away from other people
• Washing hands frequently for 20 seconds or more
• Wiping down all surfaces with a disinfectant

This means that gas inspections, including those by landlords, may still go ahead.

What if I am Shielded?

Government advice is that people who are extremely vulnerable to infection should minimise all interaction between themselves and others. These groups may also be referred to as shielded people.

If you have been written to by the government to tell you that you fall into the extremely vulnerable category, then you should inform your landlord that you are shielding due to being medically vulnerable, so you do not want a gas engineer in your home.

Your landlord can find out what is expected of them in respect of gas safety checks at the current time on the Gas Safe Register website. The landlord must then rearrange the landlords’ gas safety check so it takes place after your isolation period is over.

What If I Smell Gas?

If you smell gas, or if you have any concerns at all about gas safety, you should call the gas emergency services on freephone 0800 111 999, and switch off gas appliances until a registered gas engineer has attended and advised you that the appliance is safe to use.
