Can I Get A Free New Boiler?

Can I Get A Free New Boiler

If your boiler breaks and needs to be replaced, you may be able to save money by applying for a grant towards the cost, or even a free new boiler, from the government.  Not everyone is eligible for such schemes and choosing an option that covers the upfront cost can actually sometimes leave you out of pocket in the long term.

Grants for free new boilers and subsidised boilers

The government’s Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme allows some homeowners and private tenants to have their old, inefficient boilers replaced of charge.  The scheme was intended to help low-income families reduce their carbon footprint and make their homes more energy-efficient. If you have a boiler that is more than eight years old and are on benefits or a low income, you might qualify for a free boiler. However, government funding for the scheme is limited. You’ll also need to be a homeowner or have permission from the landlord.

The ECO grant is where the bigger energy suppliers fulfil their obligation to help low-income families. It is only available to customers of:

  • British Gas
  • Co-operative Energy
  • Economy Energy
  • EDF Energy
  • Eon
  • Extra Energy
  • First Utility
  • Npower
  • Ovo
  • Scottish Power
  • SSE
  • Utilita
  • Utility Warehouse

If you use one of these suppliers, they will contact you if you’re eligible. If you have another supplier but meet the criteria, they can still help you under the ECO scheme.  In that case, you can apply by contacting the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234.

The Affordable Warmth Obligation is part of the ECO scheme. It offers help with the cost of replacing or repairing a boiler, plus other energy-saving improvements.  You’ll again need to be in receipt of certain benefits to qualify and own your own home or be a private tenant. Those in social housing may be able to get help with a new heating system if it is being installed for the first time. Your home also needs to have an energy rating of E, F or G.
