Here is some central heating advice to help keep the heat in as well as save money this Christmas.

Tips about windows

Make use of the heat from whatever sunshine we do have by opening the curtains on south-facing windows. Shut them again at night to keep the warmth in. Check for draughts to ensure that no heat is escaping.

Getting the most from radiators

• Do not forget to dust the radiators. They will work more efficiently and alleviate allergy sufferers. Avoid blocking the radiator with clothes and towels. The heat has to circulate around them.
• Consider upgrading to a better boiler or at least get it radiator serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
• Turn radiators off in unused rooms.
• If the pressure in the boiler is too low, you can top it up with the filling loop, which is a little tap on your boiler which you turn to add extra water to get the boiler pressure back to normal.

Stopping draughts

• Heat can escape from unsealed door frames, so fit drought-resistant foam strips – You will really notice the difference.
• Also, fit draught excluders on the bottom of exterior doors.

Tips about water heating

• Turn the water thermostat down to save you money as well as make it safer for kids in the house.
• Install a low-flow showerhead.
• Use the energy-saving settings on your washing machines.
