How Could Mains Water Pressure Affect My Combi Boiler?
Your mains water pressure has a significant influence over your boiler’s performance. Read on to find out why.
How could mains water pressure affect my combi boiler?
For cold-mains-fed combi boilers, it is important that your fitter ensures before or at the time of installation that the water main is big enough to deliver sufficient water to the boiler whilst one or more of the other outlets are in use (eg by flushing toilets, filling a washing machine or running the cold taps). If the water pressure at the main is insufficient, then cold water may be diverted from the boiler when multiple outlets are used. This can be addressed by giving the boiler a higher priority than all the other outlets, for example, by connecting it, so it is the first draw from the mains.
The performance of a mains fed hot water system is dependent on the mains water supply giving you enough dynamic pressure and a high enough flow rate so it can supply both hot and cold water at the same time.
So, whilst there may be sufficient mains pressure, the flow rate is affected by the size, type and condition of the incoming main. Pressure should not be confused with the flow and dynamic pressure will always be less than static pressure. If the pressure is too high (it is usually 10 bar or less), then a water pressure reducing valve may be required to protect the boiler.
