The Gas Safe Register’s research conducted for the Gas Safety Week at the end of September revealed that one-third of Brits don’t recognise the signs of an unsafe appliance. Do you?

The figures were collected for Gas Safety Week by Gas Safe Register, who want to raise awareness about the dangers associated with unsafe gas appliances.

The signs to look out for that say a gas appliance is unsafe are:

• a lazy yellow flame
• the pilot light keeps going out
• black marks on or around the appliance
• increased condensation inside windows

One in six adults admitted that they do not take any steps at all to ensure that the gas appliances in their home are safe. Nearly half said that they do have their gas appliances checked annually by a qualified and Gas Safe registered engineer. In terms of early warning, two in five have an audible carbon monoxide alarm, and one in three know that you should always check that your gas engineer is signed up to the Gas Safe Register.

Six Steps to Gas Safety

1. Only ever use Gas Safe registered engineers
2. Check the front & back of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register card to confirm that they’re qualified to work on your gas appliances
3. Get all of your gas appliances annually serviced and safety checked
4. Familiarise yourself with the signs of CO poisoning;
   1. Headaches
   2. Dizziness
   3. Breathlessness
   4. Nausea
   5. Collapse
   6. Loss of consciousness.
5. Check appliances for the warning signs above
6. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm as a second line of defence
