The Building Regulations require Gas Safe registered businesses to self-certify any relevant appliances they have installed and notify the LA. If you own a property, it is also your responsibility to ensure the Building Regulations are followed, so it is in your interest to ensure that the installation work is notified.

The certificate belongs to the property, so keep it safe as you will need it if you decide to sell or re-mortgage your home. Is my engineer legally obliged to provide me with a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate for gas work?

So long as the work is of a type that needs to be notified, then yes – your engineer or the business you contracted to carry out the work is legally obliged to provide you with a certificate – and notify the LA of the work – within 30 working days. Those thirty days exclude Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holidays and other public holidays.

I did not get a Building Regulations Certificate – what do I do?

In the first instance, you should contact your engineer and instruct them to notify Gas Safe Register and the LA of the work immediately. If the business is no longer registered or has ceased training, then you will need to get a suitably qualified business such as LW Heating and Plumbing to inspect the work and notify it in their name.
