Boiler Breakdown Guide

What Size Combi Boiler?

What size combi boiler do you need for your home? Choosing the right size of boiler can be a challenging task, and though it is best to consult a Heating Engineer first to get advice, it is handy to have an idea of what you will need when you are setting your budget. Our guide to what size combi boiler is here to help you to plan.

What size combi boiler do I need for my house?

Combi boilers come in three different sizes, ranging from 24kW to 42kW.

As a guide, most flats, apartments and smaller homes (with up to 10 radiators and a single bathroom) need only a smaller 24 – 27kw Combi Boiler.

For medium or large sized houses that have 3 to 4 bedrooms and up to 15 radiators, with one or two bathrooms (or an en-suite), a 28-34kw Combi Boiler is usually right.

The biggest combi boilers – those rated at 35kw – 42kw – are for the very largest houses with 16 or more radiators and two or more bathrooms or en-suites.

For families that need a lot of hot water, a more powerful boiler (higher kW) will give a better flow rate for hot water when it is being used in multiple rooms.

Combi boilers do not cope well when you have more than one shower running at the same time. If you need multiple showers, a system boiler or an electric shower may help.

What is a Combi boiler?

A combi boiler provides the heat for your radiators and also for your hot water taps. Hot water is supplied on demand whenever you turn on the taps.

A combi boiler does not need a tank in the loft, nor does it need a storage cylinder for hot water in the airing cupboard. Water Is heated directly from the mains as it flows through the boiler, so water pressure is good.
