• Have all the gas appliances in your property checked annually for safety by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ensure the engineer carries out a test of the tightness of the pipework to ensure gas is not leaking, and a visual inspection of the gas pipework should be completed.
• Be sure to ask to see your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card – check both the front and back. The front confirms their registration and identity; the back confirms they can do the work you’ve asked of them.
• Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – these are headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and finally loss of consciousness.
• Watch out for the warning signs that a gas appliance is not working properly –yellow flames, condensation and black stains. Remember gas appliances can be unsafe even if they do not display symptoms, so have them checked annually.
• Buy a carbon monoxide alarm and install it near to your gas fire, the boiler or another appliance. Use gas appliances only for their intended purposes: for example, don’t use your cooker to heat a room.
• Make sure there is sufficient ventilation for gas appliances and ensure air vents and chimneys are not blocked.
• If you are a tenant in a rented property, then make sure that your landlord has provided you with a certificate to show an annual gas safety check has been done. This is required by law.
