If you conduct work on a gas appliance and you are not Gas Safe registered, then you are putting your and your family’s lives at risk of leaks, fires, explosions and the silent killer – deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

Don’t risk your life – get a Gas Safe registered engineer to do all your gas work. Registered engineers are regularly retrained to make sure they are up-to-date with the latest changes in the industry. 

Sub-contractors

Many people assign a home improvement project to a single builder or project manager to save time and money. There are contractors that understand well the importance of gas safety, but many do not. A recent report revealed that more than 100,000 home improvement jobs resulted in illegal gas work, and in every case, the work had been subcontracted to a builder or contractor who had themselves employed an unregistered business for the gas work.

If you use a subcontractor, these guidelines may be useful:

• Find out if the job involves gas work. If it does, employ a Gas Safe registered engineer to carry it out.
• If you’re using a builder or project manager, remember that you can still check yourself that the engineer is Gas Safe registered and ask to see their credentials.
• If you have had a new gas appliance fitted, the registered engineer should inform your Local Authority.
