Vaillant Group Backs Mandatory Carbon Monoxide Alarms Campaign

Vaillant Group – one of the leading heating technology manufacturers in the world – has given its backing to a new campaign which aims to save lives by changing the laws relating to carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.

The company, which sells under both the Vaillant and Glow-worm brands in the UK, is backing a campaign to make Carbon Monoxide alarm installation a mandatory requirement in every home in England and Wales installed with a carbon burning appliance. The measure is already a law in both Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The ‘No to CO’ campaign is spearheaded by Plumb Centre and alarm manufacturer Honeywell. The initiative has received support from across the heating industry. The campaign’s first objective is to persuade 100,000 people to sign its e-petition, and trigger a debate on the proposal in the House of Commons, which will bring the law a step closer.

Vaillant Group’s UK & Western Europe Managing Director said: “The mandatory installation of CO detectors in England and Wales will be a positive change that we would welcome. I applaud Plumb Centre for their leadership in campaigning for this change in the law and strongly encourage consumers and installers to the website www.no-co.co.uk and sign the e-petition.

“Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer, and the best form of protection is to have any carbon burning appliance in the home regularly serviced and maintained. A professionally installed CO alarm can also save lives.”

Plumb Centre’s Gail van Dijk said of the initiative: “Approximately 84% of UK homes are already fitted with smoke detectors, but just 15% currently have CO alarms. Every death from CO poisoning is one death too many. We have been overwhelmed by support from politicians, trade bodies, boiler manufacturers and ordinary people. We must now convert that support into signatures on our petition. We hope that the industry can come together to stop these needless deaths.”
