How Much Could I Save On Heating Costs?
It is important to consider how much you could save on heating costs as heating costs make up about 60% of the annual spend on energy bills, so choose a new, more efficient boiler can really make a big difference.
How much could I save on heating costs?
The most inefficient old boilers have been replaced by more modern ones that are much more efficient.
Replacing a G-rated boiler could save you as much as:
- In a mid-floor flat – £95
- In a mid-terrace house – £175
- In a detached bungalow – £180
- In a semi-detached house – up to £215
- In a detached house – up to £350
Upgrading your inefficient gas boiler with a newer A-rated condensing model with an electronic programmer, room thermostat and TRVS (thermostatic radiator valves) could save the average mid-terraced homeowner as much as £175 a year. Savings will vary based on the thermal properties and size of your house and are based on the fuel prices in March 2016.
The costs of replacing your boiler vary, but as a guide, a gas boiler replacement plus the installation of thermostatic radiator valves will cost about £2,500 excluding radiators.
What else can I do to improve my central heating system?
Heat recovery devices
Some heat from your boiler escapes out of the flue. A passive flue gas heat recovery system captures this lost energy and uses it to heat your water.
Hot water cylinders
New hot water cylinders are fully insulated to keep hot water at the appropriate temperature for longer. It is very important that they are insulated well, to prevent heat escaping. If you have an old cylinder, you could save up to £35 a year by adding more insulation.
Chemical inhibitors
Corrosion in a central heating system causes a substantial reduction in its effectiveness. Build-ups of sludge and scale on boiler components reduces its efficiency too. Using a chemical inhibitor will reduce the rate of corrosion and help to prevent the build-up of sludge.
