Help & Advice About LPG

Are you wanting help and advice about LPG? Well LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is often used outdoors: for camping equipment, Barbeques and patio heaters. It is also used inside caravans, cabins, boats and some rural homes. If you rent out a dwelling – even for a short time – then you are classed as a landlord and have certain legal duties relating to gas safety.

Advice About LPG – Fixed appliances

All fixed LPG appliances should be serviced and safety checked annually by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. When you are buying or replacing gas appliance you need to check it is suitable for its intended location. It must only be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We recommend installing an audible carbon monoxide alarm. Carbon monoxide is an extremely poisonous gas, that can kill quickly and you cannot see, smell or taste it.

Advice About LPG – Portable LPG appliances

If  you are using a portable gas appliance you must make sure to:
  • Check the equipment’s condition before each use.
  • Familiarise yourself with the operating instructions.
  • Make sure you have the right type of gas canister for your appliance.
  • Do not force the gas canister retaining lever.

Advice About LPG Gas Cylinders

  • Install a gas detection system if possible.
  • Keep the area ventilated in order to avoid a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide.
  • When you have finished with the appliance, turn off the gas cylinder before the appliance’s controls so the gas in the hose is used up.
  • When changing cylinders make sure the gas taps or valves are turned off before you disconnect them.
  • Always change cylinders in the open air.
  • Do not over-tighten joints.

Advice About LPG Hoses

  • Only use rubber hoses with BS 3212 markings or stainless steel hoses marked EN10380.
  • If connecting directly to a cylinder or if the pressure of the regulator is more than 50 mbar use a hose marked ‘High Pressure LPG’.
  • Replace the hose if it is damaged or shows signs of cracking.
  • Keep hoses away from hot surfaces.
