Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – The Symptoms

Unsafe gas appliances can release a highly poisonous gas: carbon monoxide (CO). CO is produced when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained and is caused by incomplete burning of gas or if flues or vents are blocked. Even small amounts of gas can cause poisoning, and long-term effects can include paralysis and brain damage – or even death.

Being aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning could save someone’s life. There are six main symptoms to watch out for:

• headaches
• dizziness
• nausea
• breathlessness
• collapse
• loss of consciousness

As the symptoms are similar to those of flu, viral infections and fatigue it is common for people to mistake them for something else. If you suspect CO poisoning, you should get fresh air. Open all doors and windows, turn off all gas appliances and leave the house immediately. See your doctor or go to hospital right away – let them know that you suspect you have CO poisoning. A blood or breath test can be done to check. If you think there is immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999. The signs of CO in your home:

• Flames of a yellow or orange colour on your gas hob, rather than crisp blue;
• Dark staining or soot on or around gas appliances;
• Pilot light frequently blowing out;
• Increased condensation inside your windows.

An audible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning alarm can be used to alert you to the presence of CO gas. They are not a substitute for having your appliances serviced and checked regularly, but fitting an alarm is recommended as an additional defence. CO Alarms are similar in design to smoke alarms and can be purchased from many DIY stores and supermarkets. Make sure the alarm marked to EN 50291 and has the British Standards Kitemark.
