Gas Safe Report States 8 Million Unaware Of Gas Dangers
Jonathan Samuel, managing director of Gas Safe Register, said: “We are urging the nation to reach out to those around them who are more vulnerable when it comes to gas safety. Together, we can help prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries and reduce the number of dangerous gas appliances.” Over 250 over-65s are injured by gas appliances every year, and gas fire heaters are the riskiest appliances for older people. As a result, we have three tips to help keep older friends and relatives gas safe:1 – Have an annual gas safety check
Ask a Gas Safe registered engineer such as L&W Heating and Plumbing to check all gas appliances for safety every year. A check is quick and cost-effective and could save your life.2 – Learn the CO poisoning symptoms
CO has no smell, taste or colour, so it is important to learn the symptoms of poisoning. These are: dizziness; headaches; nausea; breathlessness; collapse and loss of consciousness. If you suspect CO poisoning, turn off all gas appliances, open all windows and doors and leave the house. See a doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.3 – Learn to recognise unsafe gas appliances
These include a lazy flickering yellow flame instead of a sharp, crisp blue one; soot or staining on/around the appliance; & excess condensation in the room. If you think your appliance is unsafe, stop using it, turn it off, and call a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. Finally, make sure to ‘Trust the Triangle’ by asking to see the gas engineer’s Gas Safe ID card & checking it to make sure the engineer is covered to check or fit the appliance.
