Do Not Forget Your CO Alarm
Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous substance produced by the incomplete burning of gas or LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). You cannot see it, taste it or smell it. It can kill quickly with no warning. How can you stay safe from this silent killer? Do not forget your CO alarm!
Do Not Forget Your CO Alarm
Carbon Monoxide poisoning kills quickly. The symptoms to look out for are:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Breathlessness
- Collapse
- Loss of consciousness
If you or a family member are suffering from any of these symptoms, you must take action fast:
- Open all the windows and doors to your property immediately
- Seek medical advice as a matter of urgency.
- If you think there is a danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline – 0800 111 999.
- Afterwards, ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect your gas system see if there is a problem.
The warning signs of a CO leak
- Flames are a yellow or orange colour on your hob, rather than blue;
- Dark staining around appliances;
- Pilot lights frequently blowing out;
- Increased condensation.
The benefits of a CO alarm
An audible alarm can alert you to the presence of CO gas in your home. It is not a substitute for having your appliances serviced regularly, but fitting a CO alarm is strongly recommended as a second line of defence. Make sure the alarm is marked to EN 50291 and has the Kitemark. We advise fitting an alarm in every room that has a gas appliance. When installing the alarm make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, CO alarms have a battery life of 5 years. If you’re unsure, ask a Gas Safe registered engineer such as L&W Heating and Plumbing for advice.
Contact L&W for more information. It could just save your life.
